LICENSEES in Redcar are signing up to a scheme to clamp down on underage drinking.

Three off-licences are the latest to join efforts to reduce anti-social behaviour by taking part in the under-21s alcohol ban.

Following the success in other areas of Redcar and Cleveland borough, Park Avenue Post Office and Redcar Wine Lodge will take part in the voluntary ban by refusing alcohol to under-21s between 6pm and 11pm every Friday and Saturday.

Laburnum Road Newsagents has gone a step further by banning sales at all times.

The scheme, also taking place in Guisborough, Saltburn, Marske, New Marske, Boosbeck and Skelton, is aimed at clamping down on alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and low-level crime among youngsters.

Police say the scheme has already resulted in a dramatic drop in rowdy teenagers loitering outside shops and off-licences.

PC Darren Brown said: "Hopefully, it will be a significant factor in helping to combat anti-social behaviour.

"The ban has worked well in other areas of Redcar and Cleveland and we aim to continue its success here.

"Our thanks go out to the off-licences involved in this scheme, and we applaud their voluntary stance in trying to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour and low-level crime often associated with the misuse of alcohol."
