A Thai Boxer from Bishop Auckland based Fire Cobra Thai Boxing Club came second in an International Kickboxing event held in Orlando, Florida.
Rob Newton, aged 17yrs, from Darlington took part in the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) World Classic Tournament held over 3 days, 10th - 12th August, at the Orlando World Centre Marriott resort, Florida. The event, which attracted over 200 competitors from around the World, was made up of over 140 knockout' style bouts, with the winner of each bout progressing to the next stage of the competition.
Rob made it to the final round in his weight category and stepped in to the ring against an experienced local lad from Sunrise, Florida. The bout was extremely close with both competitors battling through all three rounds. Frustratingly, Rob lost by a single point split decision.
Rob said that he enjoyed the experience and was pleased with the result. His trainer, Paul Pearson said There were internationally renowned competitors and trainers of a very high standard competing in Florida, Rob competed well and I am over the moon with second place. Hopefully we will have several more competitors taking part in next year's event'.
