PLANS have been scrapped to broadcast England’s quarter-final World Cup match on an outdoor big screen this weekend after fans left broken bottles and chairs strewn across a leisure complex.
Dozens of supporters in Darlington watched the Three Lions beat Colombia on penalties on Tuesday night in Feethams, but smashed glass, litter and damaged furniture was left behind after the game.
The venue had provided the screen for free, with football-themed games on offer for families and the complex's newest burger bar, KerbEdge, providing food and Mangobean offering England-themed World Cup drinks.
However, it was confirmed yesterday that Feethams will not broadcast England v Sweden as originally planned, instead swapping for sporting action from Wimbledon.
Hundreds of social media users condemned the mess left on the Feethams plaza, branding it a "disgrace" and "idiotic behaviour".
Others thanked the hospitality of Feethams staff during previous World Cup broadcasts.
Feethams marketing manager, Ahmad Majidiasl, said: “Our Summer of Sport event is all about celebrating the very best of football, tennis and golf, with three huge tournaments taking place this summer.
“On Saturday we’ll be providing tennis lovers a great outdoor space where they can enjoy the very best of action taking place on the day in the July sun.”
Select restaurants in the leisure complex will be showing the match, however visitors are advised to check with venues on an individual basis.
