A PUBLIC consultation has revealed that more than 96 per cent of people who responded would like to see the Durham Light Infantry collection housed at a proposed new history centre.

Durham County Council is considering plans to open a history centre at the manor house at Mount Oswald, in Durham and is bidding for £4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project.

It hopes to move the Durham County Record Office away from County Hall, which it wants to demolish, and asked people what else should go in the centre.

More than 600 people responded, with 95 per cent saying it should contain copies of birth, death and marriage certificates, 96 per cent that it should have the record office and archives. More than 97 per cent wanted to see historical archaeological and environmental records and 98 per cent wanted local history books and photographs.

Around 91 per cent of people thought it should be used to register births, deaths and marriages, while 80 per cent wanted to see it as a wedding venue.
