A CEREMONY to formally welcome the next Archdeacon of Sunderland is being held at Durham Cathedral.
The Reverend Canon Bob Cooper, 50 who has been Vicar and Area Dean of Pontefract in the Diocese of Leeds for the last 12 years is being installed on July 3 at the 5.15pm evensong service.
He was ordained in 1993 after studying for ordination at Lincoln Theological
College.
He has held parish ministry positions in the former Dioceses of Ripon and Leeds and
Wakefield and was also a school chaplain in Leeds before spending a year as a chaplain in a school in Essex.
The Revd Canon Cooper said: “I was excited at the opportunity and the similarities of Pontefract to Sunderland albeit that Sunderland is a much larger area, and I wanted to be in a place where I felt both challenged and comfortable.
“The place just grabbed me; the people are friendly warm and welcoming. I think there is
enough challenge here to get my teeth into, the gospel needs to be lived and taught and breathed, and people need to be encouraged to do that, something I look forward to doing.”
