AN empty shop and a derelict chapel in a village centre could be demolished to make way for new homes.
Dere Street Homes wants to build eight houses on the site, on Commercial Street, in Trimdon Colliery.
The company, which is based in Hedley Hill, Durham, has applied to Easington District Council for planning permission for the scheme.
It proposes to demolish the existing buildings and replace them with four three-storey, for-bedroomed terraced houses and four three-bedroomed, two-storey terraced houses, with each block separated by a 12 bay parking court.
Last Friday, Sedgefield Borough Council's development control committee, which had been consulted as a neighbouring authority, agreed to raise no objection to the plan.
Members backed the use of the brownfield site, which is near local amenities, but agreed with officers to suggest consideration of the layout to improve the development's appearance.
