THE previously untold story of Scottish soldiers forced to walk from Dunbar to Durham makes its way to a city stage next month.
Woven Bones gives a voice to Scottish prisoners of war, captured during the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 before being marched to Durham and imprisoned in the then-disused cathedral and castle.
Their story remained largely unknown until their remains were discovered in two mass burial sites during building work on Palace Green library, in 2013.
The play, written by Scottish writer and director Laura Lindow, coincides with an exhibition at the library, revealing how Durham University archaeologists located the skeletons and discovered their back story.
Following the performances, audiences will also get the chance to meet some of the team behind the excavation and hear first-hand about their work.
The play, developed by Cap-a-Pie theatre company in partnership with the university, will be presented at Durham’s Gala Theatre, on Friday and Saturday, July 6 and 7.
Tickets costing £12, are available via www.galadurham.co.uk, or by ringing (03000) 264312.
