A NORTH-EAST river became host to two major sporting events this weekend.
The River Tees was awash with competitors and supporters as athletes battled it out in an open water swim and triathlon.
Rain and chilling temperatures failed to stop brave swimmers from taking the plunge on Saturday as competitors from across the region took part in the 1.5km open water event.
Starting from Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre, in Stockton, the swimmers' route took in the Victoria Bridge and the Millennium footbridge.
Steve Chaytor, managing director of Tees Active, said: "Tees Active is pleased to be involved in new and exciting events like this open water swim. We hope to make the River Tees a real hub for water sport activities and events."
Meanwhile on Sunday, dozens of athletes successfully completed one of the region's most gruelling challenges.
The wet weather failed to put a dampener on the inaugural Stockton Middlesbrough Triathlon, as visiting and local tri-athletes competed.
Athletes had to compete a 1,500m swim in the Tees, followed by a 40km bicycle race and a 10km run.
The event started at 8am, as the competitors plunged into the River Tees.
The run and cycle legs then gave athletes the chance to make the most of the riverside setting.
