A GROUP of volunteers who help visitors find their way around Durham have received the county’s highest honour.
The Durham Pointers, visible throughout the historic city in their pink fluorescent vests, have been awarded Durham County Council’s Chairman’s Medal for their services to volunteering
The group operates seven days a week, from Easter to October each year, helping students, shoppers and tourists find their way around the city.
Last year, more than 70 volunteers giving up their time last year to support the scheme, which was named Visitor Information Provider of the Year 2017 at the North East Tourism awards.
A group of 15 representatives of from the Pointers group were presented with the medal by outgoing Chairman Councillor Bill Kellett during a ceremony at County Hall.
Cllr Kellett said: “Durham Pointers is a fantastic visitor service, with the volunteers becoming an established feature of the city centre during the tourist season.
“They offer invaluable information including advice on the park and ride service, directions to the castle, cathedral or passport office and other useful nuggets of wisdom such as the location of dog friendly cafes and events taking place in the city.
“They play an important part in ensuring visitors to our wonderful city get the most out of their stay and this award is in recognition of their dedication and knowledge.”
