A MOTHER who died after being struck by a car in Darlington has been named as Shantelle Kirkup.

The 29-year-old, from Northallerton, was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing with her five-year-old on St Cuthbert's Way, Darlington, when she was hit by a blue Ford Focus.

The married mother-of-two was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by air ambulance but died from her injuries a few hours later.

Her five-year-old son also sustained significant injuries in the collision. He was taken to James Cook University Hospital by ambulance where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver of the Ford – a 36-year-old man – was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He has been released under investigation.

Sergeant Phil Grieve, from Durham and Cleveland Specialist Operations Unit, said: “This was a distressing incident for all involved and our thoughts remain with Shantelle’s family, who are being supported by specially trained officers during this extremely difficult time.

“There were a number of people in the area at the time of the collision who assisted the emergency services – we would like to thank them for their help at the scene.

“Our officers are working hard to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision, and a significant number of witnesses have already come forward and spoken to us.

“However, if there is anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to us, please contact us on 101 and ask to speak to the Collision Investigation Unit.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone with any dash cam footage who was travelling in the area at the time of the collision.”

The incident happened at around 3.40pm on Sunday, May 6 on the northbound carriageway of St Cuthbert’s Way, opposite St Cuthbert’s Church.

The tragedy has touched the hearts of people across the region, with many taking to social media to pay their respects to the young mother, and floral tributes have been placed at the side of the road where the woman lost her life.
