WELLIES and waterproof jackets were the order of the day at the 147th Danby Show, North Yorkshire yesterday.

With the recent foot-and-mouth outbreak restricting the movement of livestock, it was horses and the RAF police dog display team that provided the outdoor entertainment for those who braved the weather.

The horticulture and handicraft marquees saw a steady stream of visitors, with exhibitor numbers beating previous records.

Jo Hopkins, who was making her debut as the show's general secretary, was upbeat, despite a lower than usual turnout caused by the rain and the enforced cancellation of the sheep and cattle classes.

She said: "We had a record number of entries for the sheep, so it was very disappointing. But on the plus side, we had record entries in nearly everything else.

"It's been really good fun, even though the weather was an absolute nightmare."

She added: "Two weeks ago, we thought we would be forced to cancel because of the weather, but then it stopped raining and the car parking field dried up so we thought we could go ahead. Then, of course, foot-and-mouth struck two days later, so it's been awkward. But, overall, we've been happy with the day, apart from the weather."
