ALMOST 150 people have signed a petition calling for a piece of open land to be declared a village green.
A committee of Witton Park residents has also collected 75 witness statements from people who remember the land being used for recreation for the past 20 years.
The Village Green Committee is meeting today, to put together a formal application to Durham County Council.
Members will then arrange to hand this, plus the petition, to county solicitor Patricia Holding.
Dozens of people have attended public meetings over the past few weeks in support of a move to register the green so the land can be protected from future development.
