VILLAGE residents are trying to think up amusing ways to decorate their garden gates in time for their annual fair.
After several years of making scarecrows for the fair in Romaldkirk, near Barnard Castle, they have been asked to switch their attention to their gates for the big day on Saturday, August 18.
Harry Dick, one of the organisers, said yesterday: "As well as enjoying all the activities, visitors will have a chance to admire our beautiful village, and will also have fun looking at some comical garden gates."
Dr Peter Austin, of Middleton in Teesdale, will open the fair at 1.30pm and judge the fancy dress competition. Stanhope Silver Band will entertain, and there will be games, races, Punch and Judy, stalls and teas.
The event dates back to the time cattle fairs were held on the village greens. The proceeds now help support the ancient St Romald's Church.
