THE English National Sheepdog Trials will go ahead in North Yorkshire next week - but may be altered to meet foot-and-mouth restrictions.
The trials take place at Busby Hall, Carlton-in-Cleveland, near Stokesley, from August 16 to 18. It is the most important annual event in the English dog-handlers' calendar.
The organising committee from Ryedale Sheepdog Society feared that the event would have to be cancelled. But, with the first easing of restrictions, they are confident it can now go ahead.
Committee chairman Charles Cutler, who farms near Great Ayton, said no farmer wanted to do anything to risk spreading the disease. "The memories of 2001 are too raw, but this is as important as a cup semi-final to us," he said.
Organisers hope to get a special movement licence so that the large number of sheep required can be moved to Busby Hall.
The British Deer Farmers Association hopes to go ahead with a planned open day at Hornby Castle, near Bedale, North Yorkshire, on Wednesday, August 29.
It will be aimed at those considering diversifying into deer farming and those already involved. Details and bookings (£20 per person) on 01629-827037.
