A blistering opening round put Hartlepool's Graeme Storm top of the leaderboard at the USPGA in Oaklahoma.
Storm ended the day five under par, to enjoy a two-shot lead after the best round of his life.
The Wynyard Club member, starting on the tenth, birdied his first two holes. A par on the par 4 12th was followed by another birdie - on the 547 yard, par 5 13th.
And, after consecutive pars, a memorable birdie on the par 4, 507 yard 16th put him on four under at the turn.
His flawless round continued on hole 2, when he chipped in from around 70 yards, turning a possible five into a birdie three.
Comfortable pars followed for the rest of his round, although he missed a birdie chance on the nine, missing a birdie chance from three yards.
"I am ecstatic,"Storm beamed.
"I came here with no form whatsoever and to shoot 65 at any time in a major is unbelievable ? it's an amazing feeling.
"I was pretty calm. I did not have any expectations because I shot 18 over par at Firestone last week, although that was on a tough golf course.
"So I just though 'forget technique, forget everything, just go out and play'.
"This is only my sixth major and I did not expect this, I will just go out today and start again.
"Obviously the course conditions in the morning are always going to be the best of greens and the heat is not going to be as much of a factor in the humidity.
"But I'll just go out there, keep doing the same things, really.
He added: "It means everything to me be leading a major.
"It is an absolute pleasure to be top of the leaderboard with such a world class field.
"But there are three days to go and I have to take each day one at a time.
"I have not been playing great so my first target was making the cut and then go from there."
