A FESTIVAL is being held to recognise the effort young carers put into providing support for family members with physical or mental health problems.
The event will be held at Moor House Adventure Centre, in West Rainton, near Durham, on Saturday, August 18.
The day will enable them to meet other young carers, share experiences and enjoy a break from responsibilities.
The activities for the 200 carers attending include football, archery, a relay race, face painting, chill-out and games zones, and a bouncy castle.
The festival is organised and funded by social inclusion charity Developing Initiatives Supporting Communities (Disc), and Barnardos, Prince's Royal Trust for Carers, YMCA, and Crossroads.
The agencies offer support to carers under 18.
Ben Smith, project leader at Disc, in Durham, said: "We acknowledge the contribution that young carers make, not just for those they care for, but for the wider community too.
"It's vital that young carers are recognised and valued, and we hope that this festival will give them the opportunity to get together and most importantly have fun."
Jodie McMaster, 16, won Sedgefield Borough Council's young carer of the year award this year.
People like her often care for a parent, sibling or grandparent, and have responsibilities beyond their years, Mr Smith said.
Their duties can lead to difficulties at school, college, and home.
