A FOOTBALL club will hold last-ditch talks today, in an attempt to avoid eviction from its ground.

Spennymoor Town FC was given 28 days notice to leave The Brewery Field last month, and have until Wednesday, August 22, to reach a compromise, or find a new home.

Spennymoor Town Council made the order after the club failed to satisfy councillors that it had a sustainable business plan to conclude negotiations on a 25-year lease for the ground.

The council claim that there has been several breaches of obligation by the club, but has agreed to a meeting at the ground with committee members and Mike Amos, chairman of the Arngrove Northern League.

The club has already taken steps to rectify some of the council's complaints, including issues over security and drug users congregating outside the ground.

Volunteers have also been working to tidy up the Brewery Field ahead of the meeting and the team's first league game of the new season against Seaham Red Star on Saturday.

At present, that will be the last league game to be played at the ground - although there is also an FA Cup qualifier against North Shields the following weekend - but there are hopes that a solution will be reached following today's meeting.

Mr Amos said: "It shows willingness on the council's part to listen to what we have to say and to look at what has been done on the ground - both up front and behind the scenes. We're very grateful to them."
