THREE nightclubs are to be shut over the busy New Year period after magistrates granted closure orders against them.
Police asked for closure orders against three bars on Collingwood Street, in Newcastle - House of Smith, Madame Koo and Floritas - saying they had evidence of criminal activity on the premises.
Magistrates at South Tyneside granted one-week closure orders which will prevent all three opening until January 3.
An earlier hearing imposed a similar order on The Empress bar in Newcastle.
Chief Superintendent David Felton said: “We are pleased with the outcome for all the premises and believe this will serve as a strong warning to everyone involved in the night time economy in Newcastle.
“These closures show that Northumbria Police will use all methods available to ensure we maintain a safe and enjoyable night time economy in the city”.
