A North Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed the road reopened at 5pm after being blocked for the whole day while another vehicle was found to remove the machinery.
Drivers were asked to find an alternative route and be patient while the emergency services tried to clear traffic that had backed up on the road while traffic also came to a standstill in nearby towns and villages such as Barnard Castle.
The police spokeswoman said the police were originally called at 10.44am after the incident near the junction at West Layton.
"An excavator fell from the HGV that was transporting when the driver took action to avoid another vehicle," she said.
