A YOUNG motorbike racer has fought off hundreds of competitors to be selected for the British Talent Club Motorbike Team.

Franco Bourne, of Crook, is one of just 22 youngsters from across the UK to be selected for the team, following a competition at Silverstone Circuit.

The 13-year-old, who has been racing since he was seven, was one of 200 youngsters to compete for a prized spot which will now see him compete in international tournaments.

The King James I Academy student was put before a panel of judges and had to perform in rounds as hopefuls were gradually knocked out.

Franco said: "It's massive for me because British riders don't normally get up to GP level so it's a big opportunity for me and will hopefully lead to bigger things after."

And after being fitted for his new leathers and helmet, the youngster also got to meet some of the celebrities of the business including one of his favourites John McPhee.

The teenager, who has been supported by his family and several sponsors, hopes to one day become a profession racer and trains every week at the Teesside Autodrome.

His parents, Kirsten Bourne and David Summerbell and grandparents Avril and Stephen Summerbell, said they were all "very proud" and would support Franco all the way.
