OVERNIGHT road resurfacing will take place at Barnard Castle this weekend.

Durham County Council will carry out work at Westwick Road from Friday to Sunday, from 7pm each night to 6am the next day.

The road will be closed between its junctions with Birch Road and the access to Westwick Lodge.

A diversion route will be in place via Cross Lane, the A66, the C165 and C146 (Egglestone Abbey Bridge), the C44 through Whorlton and the A67, and vice versa.

HGVs will be diverted via the A66, the A1(M) north, the B6275 and the A67.

John Reed, the council’s head of technical services, said: “This resurfacing is part of our ongoing programme to maintain our county’s roads.

“We appreciate motorists will experience some disruption but we have planned the work to keep this to a minimum, including doing it overnight.

“I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience and understanding while this resurfacing is carried out.”
