A PLAQUE is to be installed on a railway platform to commemorate its significance in transport history.
The red plaque will be unveiled at Heighington railway station, near Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday, September 27, at midday.
It commemorates the inaugural day of the Stockton and Darlington Railway on the same day in 1825 when the steam engine Locomotion One was placed on the tracks - heralding the start of the railway system in Britain.
Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Sue Snowdon, will perform the duty.
Mrs Snowdon will also be unveiling a plaque at 10.30am at Darlington’s Skerne Railway Bridge - one of the earliest railway bridges built, and one which continues to be used.
