BEER and busking were combined for a musical fundraiser with a twist at the weekend.

That's after The Witham Community Arts Centre, in Barnard Castle, opened their doors to buskers of all ages and abilities in a bid to raise some funds for the venue.

Musicians took to the 'stage' in the venue's Cafe Bar with performances from the likes of youth folk ensemble, Cream Tees, open mic specialist Malcolm Elsbury and authentic trad-folk trio, Over the Yardarm.

Danny McColl, owner and brewer at McColl’s Brewery, also brought along several beers for sampling and tasting and a raffle gave visitors the chance to win a package of McColl’s beers as well as tickets for folk gigs Lady Maisery and Blazin’ Fiddles.

Maddy Sutton, the Witham's audience development officer and a keen musician herself, said the event was a great success and enjoyed by all.

She said: "It was the best busking event we have organised so far.

"There was such an electric atmosphere in the building, with friends, volunteers, musicians and new members of the public really enjoying the event.

"People were so happy, clapping along to the music, really congratulatory and basically very hyped."

The event raised £205 from the busking and more than £680 from the sales of McColl's Beer.
