TWO walkers had a lucky escape after being caught out in thick fog on a mountain along the Pennine Way.
Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by North Yorkshire Police at 10.30pm last night (Monday, August 28) after two walkers called them to say they were lost in thick fog on Great Shunner Fell, a mountain to the north of Hawes and the third highest peak in the Yorkshire Dales.
Fortunately rescue team members were returning from a caving exercise two-miles away so were on the scene within minutes.
They found the missing walkers at the 600m point of the mountain after two hours of searching.
The pair were cold but uninjured.
A spokesman for the rescue team warned of the dangers of the nights drawing in and said: "Although it's summer in the valleys it's cooling down on the tops and the nights are arriving a bit quicker now.
"Take a torch and some extra clothing just in case."
