HEALTH commissioners in North Yorkshire are hoping to launch a dedicated county-wide perinatal mental health service for pregnant women and new mums.
Clinical commissioning groups covering Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby, Vale of York, Scarborough and Ryedale, and Harrogate will be submitting a joint bid for funding later this summer.
A consultation has been launched, with the CCGs wanting to hear the thoughts of pregnant women and new mothers – as well as partners – which will help shape the new service.
“Many women feel more vulnerable and anxious during pregnancy and after the birth and for some it can trigger more serious mental health problems," said Dr Peter Billingsley of the Ryedale CCG.
“To improve the health and wellbeing of our children, it is so important for them to have the best possible start in life and preserving maternal mental and physical wellbeing is the best beginning.
