A FAMILY still struggling to move on from the loss of their baby two years ago have set up a charity to support other bereaved parents.

Nicola Hick, 27, and her partner Martyn Durkin, 31, lost baby Kyle in 2015 when he was only nine-months-old.

His life expectancy was greatly reduced when he was born 15 weeks premature and with three holes in his heart.

He weighed just 1lb 7oz but a successful heart operation in April 2015 looked to have helped him overcome the worst of his problems, However, Miss Hick woke up on July 12, that year to find her son’s heart had stopped beating.

The devastated family were given help to buy a headstone for Kyle and have since set up Kyle’s Wonderwall Fund to help others do the same.

Miss Hick, from Acomb, York, said: “It was a weight off our shoulders having the headstone paid for.”

She said there were a number of graves in nearby Fulford Cemetery without a headstone and added: "It breaks my heart."

She went on: “We named it Kyle’s Wonderwall Fund because we always used to sing Wonderwall to him and when we do charity events everyone sings it at the end of the night.

“This is keeping me going and it’s nice to know we can help out people and keep Kyle’s name going in a positive way.”

Throughout the family’s ordeal they spent time in various hospitals and became friendly with other families in a similar situation.

Money for the headstones is raised through various initiatives and Miss Hick’s step brothers - Jon and Ben Sharp - are doing their bit by cycling 874 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 11 days.
