AN art gallery is holding an exhibition based on a controversial visit to the region from a former Prime Minister.

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) is launching Wilderness Way, which looks at Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s visit to Teesside in 1987 .

The exhibition will bring together print, painting, film, music and documents to explore various of aspects of Mrs Thatcher’s visit and her reign as Prime minister, including the Teesside steel strike in 1980.

It will also feature the riots of 1981, the Irish hunger strike. the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Dianna, the victorious Falklands War in 1982 and the miner’s strike in 1984 and 1985.

The gallery’s new exhibition programme opens today and runs until Sunday, October 8.
