VINTAGE postcards offering a rare glimpse into the region’s history will go under the hammer next week.
Tennants Auctioneers at Leyburn are holding a sale of stamps, postcards and postal ephemera next Wednesday and Thursday.
Many of the postcards form an extraordinary record of everyday life in the region from as early as the 1930s.
One of the more curious images, however, is contained in a lot of cards depicting the River Tees and Shipping in Middlesbrough; alarming to modern eyes, one card depicts an Indian elephant being unloaded from a ship on a sling, with crew looking on from the deck.
