A NATIONAL Trust property is offering a fathers day ‘treat’ with a difference with the launch of a competition inspired by the historical art of lawn mowing.

The garden at Treasurer’s House in York City centre is in need of a trim and officials have thrown down the gauntlet to visitors.

The challenge will see competitors battle it out to see who can cut the best lines in the immaculate lawn, but in the interests of protecting the environment and keeping noise to a minimum, only use hand tools are allowed.

Gardener Steve Hodges said: “We’re daring your dad to mow the straightest line across the beautiful lawn in front of Treasurer’s House.

“He’ll have to use an old Webb’s mower and no wiggly lines are allowed, so there’s going to be a lot at stake.”

The competitor who cuts the most unswerving line will be treated to a plate of croque monsieur in the Below Stairs Café.

Other activities taking place in the Treasurers House on Sunday include croquet and Lego figures hidden throughout the house as part of the demolition and restoration display.

Another York National Trust property, Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens, is also hosting a day of activities when Harrogate and York Scout and Guide groups bring their Gang Show to the gardens.

It will feature original songs, sketches and dances.
