AN exhibition of models made out of a constuction kit that has been enthralling children for 100 years has opened in the region.

The North Eastern Meccano Society opened an exhibition at the Bishop Auckland Discovery Centre, in County Durham.

Model lovers can see working Meccano models on display, including an Angel of the North design and a Dr Who Dalek figure along with the usual vehicles and cranes.

Karen MacNair, a volunteer at the discovery centre, said: "This event should be popular, especially with children. It is something a bit different that the whole family can enjoy.

"Since re-opening in February, we have tried to get a variety of different exhibitions and displays at the centre, all of which have been a success."

The event will be open today and Saturday, from 10am to 3pm. For more information call 01388-662221. Admission is free.
