A BOWLING club is looking for new members to secure its future.

Consett Park Bowling Club, Blackhill, which is approaching its centenary year, will no longer be funded by Durham County Council, which owns the pavilion and green.

So members of the club, which was opened in 1923, are looking for new people take up the sport to secure its future.

The club also has a function room with a bar and kitchen facilities available to hire for social events.

Recently the facilities have been targeted by young people, who rode scooters on the roof and played football on the green.

Members hope by attracting younger people to the sport they will have more respect for the club in future.

Club secretary Pat Armstrong said: “Like all clubs, it has got a reputation as ‘old man marbles’, but our drive is to spread the word about the great game, and get more members.”

“It is not an old man’s game anymore and we have members as young as 12 who play.

“It is a technical game, but is also gentle exercise, so it is ideal for those who are less able.”

Anyone interested in trying their hand at the sport can turn up any Sunday from 1pm for a free try.
