A FORMER non-league footballer who was a mainstay of his club in the 1980s has died following a long illness, aged 57.

Malcolm Newton, known as Mally, joined Bishop Auckland Football Club in 1980. By the time he finished playing for the club in 1988 he had passed the legendary Bobby Hardisty's record for most appearances.

Mr Newton was a member of the Bishops side that won the Northern League and Durham FA Challenge Cup double in the 1984/1985 and 1985/1986 seasons.

He also played in the club's memorable FA Cup games at their old Kingsway ground against Carlisle United in 1982 and Blackpool in 1987.

He played alongside his brother David for many years and he joined the club when his other brother Brian became its manager.

Mr Newton died on Wednesday, February 1.

The club confirmed the sad news on its website, where former chairman Steve Newcomb said the player was "A true Bishop loved by all at Kingsway".

He added: "Don't make players like him now, my thoughts with his family."
