A FLEDGLING student theatre group is making a dream stage debut in a colourful outdoor seasonal setting.

Members of Durham Shakespeare Company hope the weather remains kind next week as they prepare for four outdoor performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The 25-strong cast is putting the finishing touches at rehearsals before the opening performance, at the university's Botanic Garden, next Tuesday.

Director Paul Thorpe said: "It's an open-air setting and we want people to come along, bring a picnic and enjoy the informal atmosphere."

Mr Thorpe said the new company plans to perform a Shakespeare play each summer term.

The Botanic Garden run is a warm-up as the company takes the play on the road, on a Trans-Atlantic tour, performing at each of the Ivy League universities, including Harvard, Princeton and Yale, in the US, in September.

A Midsummer Night's Dream runs at The Botanic Garden, in Hollingside Lane, off South Road, Durham, from Tuesday to Thursday, June 19 to 21.

It is staged at 2pm on June 19, 7pm on June 20 and both 2pm and 7pm on June 21.

The charge is £4, payable at the visitor centre door, or tickets can be bought in advance at Durham Tourist Information Centre, in the Gala Theatre.
