A PARADE dating back more than 270 years has taken place.

The Ancient Order of Foresters held its 138th bi-annual parade on Sunday, through the villages of Carlton and Melmerby, in Coverdale, North Yorkshire.

The men were accompanied by Muker's band as they marched from The Foresters Arms, which is named after the order, through Carlton and then to a church service at Carlton Methodist Church.

They had lunch and afterwards held a fancy dress competition, before another march, to Melmerby and back.

A variety of sports events were held in the evening for adults and children. The children had tea and the adults enjoyed a barbecue.

In the evening the adults also took part in a bail push, tug-of-war and a game of football.

About ten officers of the foresters' order still wear green uniforms that are about 150 years old.

Secretary, Peter Dinsdale, said: "It was probably the best turnout we have ever had."
