AN online petition has been launched on the Downing Street website against plans for a unitary authority in North Yorkshire.

The petition was launched by former North Yorkshire county and Harrogate district councillor Claire Kelley.

The petition states: "We, the undersigned, petition the Prime Minister to reject the proposal to create a unitary North Yorkshire County Council.

"The council would be the largest administrative area in England and only Birmingham and Leeds City Councils would have larger populations. The new council would be extremely remote for most of its residents.

"The proposals would be bad for local democracy, bad for local services and bad for the local economy."

The petition has so far been signed by more than 100 people, including Harrogate MP Phil Willis. He has been joined by the county's six other MPs in opposing the single authority bid.
