A CORNER of a Teesside community will remain a no go area all day today, following a major fire.
A 200 metre exclusion zone will be maintained around Old Station Road, South Bank, Middlesbrough, until mid evening tonight, following a blaze, fought by 40 firefighters at Cliff's Auto Salvage, on Monday night.
The flames swept through 120 scrap cars and a building at the yard.
Cleveland Fire Brigade ground monitors will be switched off only at 8pm tonight after spraying a continuous 24-hour curtain of water to cool off volatile gas cylinders discovered at the scene.
Billingham Station Manager Steve McCarten, who was Operations Commander at the incident, said "We have no idea how it started at the moment.
"We haven't even been able to start a preliminary investigation because we identified what looked like an acetylene cylinder, so we had to withdraw from the incident and move into protection mode."
