A MUCH-LOVED former colliery band could be forced to close if members cannot find a new conductor.
Hetton Silver Band, which used to represent Eppleton Colliery and dates back 120 years, has been without a leader since Ken Wheatley retired last month.
Members are appealing for anyone interested in the post to come forward.
Julie Carmichael, a tenor horn player, said: "There's 120 years of history in this band and it would be a shame not to keep it going. We don't want to close, but it's something that we have to think about."
Mr Wheatley had led the band for six years, taking it to national competition finals in Torquay in 2002.
The band, which has about 18 regular players, was recently promoted to section two - the third division of bands.
Mrs Carmichael, who has been a member for 30 years, said: "Unfortunately, as well as the conductor, we're also a couple of players short.
"But we're looking to the future. We need a conductor who is willing to teach younger players."
The band rehearses twice a week in South Market Street, Hetton-le-Hole. Thursday night practices begin at 7.30pm and Sunday morning practices at 10.30am.
A small allowance is payable to a new conductor. For more details, call Mrs Carmichael on 0191-526-0892.
