THOUSANDS of music fans enjoyed the sunshine and scores of live acts at a free music festival yesterday.
Middlesbrough Music Live attracted a record crowd with eight stages set up across the town centre for different musical tastes.
It was the first time the festival, in its eighth year, was held in an enclosed arena.
Fencing was put up around the site and roads were closed. Organisers hailed it a success that brought a family atmosphere to the festival.
Headlining the main stage last night were The Twang. Also on the top of the billing were Dub Pistols and crooner Tony Christie.
Other acts included Kubichek! and Darlington-based We Start Fires.
The festival is renowned for helping to promote new bands.
There were two stages for local talent, an open mic arena, an acoustic area and disco stage.
Promoter Graham Ramsay, from Ten Feet Tall Promotions, said: "This is a festival that has evolved from year to year. It is a big change to move onto this site.
"This year is the first time we have used the natural quadrangle, which has a great atmosphere. It feels tremendous.
"It looks to have been the busiest we have ever had before."
Friends Kerry Harding and Lindsay Kirtley visited the festival after hearing it advertised on the radio.
The Stockton pair said: "It is excellent. It is full of great bands."
In the past, Middlesbrough Music Live has featured performances from now-established acts such as Keane, Darkness, Razorlight, We are Scientists and Kasabian.
