A CAMPAIGN has been launched urging businesses to encourage employees to drink more tap water.
Unison, the UK's largest union, has joined forces with Northumbrian Water and the Water for Health Alliance to send out the message that tap water is cheaper, eco-friendly and the most effective way to stay hydrated and healthy.
The project was launched at Durham County Hall where employers were asked to provide accessible mains-fed water from bottle-free chillers in their work places.
They were advised the availability of tap water would help to combat illness and reduce absenteeism.
Sir Derek Wanless, Northumbrian Water chairman, said local supplies represented top quality tap water which is among the best in the world.
He said: "Eight glasses a day are recommended for healthy living and people should drink water throughout the day.''
Tap water is also a cheap option - at £1 for 1,000 litres, compared with £950 for the bottled variety.
