AN art exhibition attracted more than 450 people.

Teesdale Art Society's Spring Exhibition, held between May 24 and May 30 at the Witham Hall in Barnard Castle, featured 77 paintings by 23 artists.

Visitors were invited to vote for the picture they liked best and Gavin Carr's painting of Barnard Castle Bridge, entitled Frosty Morning, gained most support with 35 votes, narrowly beating George Jameson's Mediterranean Sunrise and Suzanne William's Auckland Park.

Vicky von Witt, a visitor from Australia, said: "Local artists are obviously stimulated by the Teesdale environment."

The society is starting its summer sketching programme on most Monday afternoons or evenings.

Afternoon sessions begin next Monday at 2pm, meeting at the village hall in Middleton.

The group will also have an all day meeting, led by Geoff Hewitt, between 10am and 4pm at Low Barns Nature Reserve, Witton-le-Wear on July 30. Non-members are welcome to the society's meetings.
