A TEENAGE mother who wounded her friend with a glass in a nightclub is to have her drinking controlled by a court order.

Gemma Harrison,19, had also been drinking too much when she lost her driving licence previously, said prosecutor Richard Parsell.

In the early hours in Aruba nightclub, in Redcar, on September 29, she had a row with her friend Sarah Cox's boyfriend.

Harrison later attempted to throw a drink over him, but the glass slipped from her hand and struck 19-year-old Miss Cox on the forehead, Teesside Crown Court was told. She was treated at hospital for a 3cm cut which left a scar.

Christopher Baker, mitigating, said that Harrison was a perfectly polite young lady when not in drink.

He added: "It's clear that she has made strides to reduce her alcohol intake.

"It was not a regular occurrence, but it was to excess, and she has made efforts to stop that. She has worked with children up until recently, and having a conviction for assault is not going to assist in her sort of work."

Judge Les Spittle told her: "Normally for offences of wounding where a glass is involved, people go to prison.

"However, in this situation, the prosecution has made it very clear in a fair way that they accept that your intention on this evening when in drink, having fallen out, was to throw your drink over somebody."

Harrison, of Victoria Terrace, Loftus, was given two years' supervision to address her drink problem.

She was also ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work for the community after she pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.
