MYSTERY surrounds the sudden closure of a North-East nursery which had previously been rated as Outstanding by Ofsted.

It is believed parents of the children who attend the Cherry Tree Nursery, in Sedgefield, County Durham, were contacted on Friday afternoon to say Ofsted had closed the nursery with immediate effect - but were given no reason for the decision.

The private nursery, at North End, describes itself as “a family run business” which provides a “homely, warm and welcoming environment” for 30 children aged from babies to five-years-old.

It was rated as Outstanding following a successful Ofsted inspection in 2013.

Speaking on Monday morning, an Ofsted spokesman said: “We can confirm we have suspended the registration of this early years setting while an investigation is carried out.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further while this is ongoing.”

It is not known is the closure is permanent or temporary.

Ofsted has informed Durham County Council of its decision.

Parents of children who attend the nursery have expressed concern and distress at the lack of explanation for the closure and criticised the timing of the announcement, which left little time to find alternative childcare.

One parent, who wished to stay anonymous, said: “It was extremely late notice coming up to a weekend and fairly late in the day.

“It was a bit of a shambles.

“We have called Ofsted and they won’t tell us anything.

“”We weren’t aware of any Ofsted inspection having taken place in the recent past.

“Everyone is very shocked and very surprised.

“Our experience of the nursery had been very good so we are mystified.”

The Northern Echo contacted the nursery for comment but received no reply.
