PLANS for a shopping and leisure complex in a rapidly growing residential area will go before councillors next week.
The proposals for five acres of land at Brough with St Giles, near Catterick Garrison, include shops, restaurants, a nursing home, 72 flats and houses, an indoor children's activity centre and 180 parking spaces.
Access would be shared with the existing Lidl supermarket, and pedestrian and cycle links would be created. At least ten per cent of the energy used by the complex would be renewable.
A report to Richmondshire District Council, which will meet on Tuesday, said changes to the local plan expanded the scope for development on the site.
Colburn Town Council backs the application, by Castlevale Properties, and Brough with St Giles Parish Council welcomes the scheme if traffic issues can be finalised. Objectors say the scheme will remove valuable industrial land, have too many houses and cause traffic congestion, while supporters say it will provide needed facilities.
Planners want delegated authority to grant permission when details such as affordable housing provision are finalised.
