FORESTS in the region are playing their part in protecting the future of rare woodland butterflies.
The number and diversity of butterflies and moths in England's woodlands has declined considerably over the last 50 years.
Working with Butterfly Conservation, the Forestry Commission has announced a plan to improve the plight of the insects A total of 140 Forestry Commission woods have been identified in the strategy as key sites for woodland butterflies and moths. Of these, 77 have been designated as A grade priority sites, as they support some of the UK's most endangered species.
