Tributes were today paid to the dad-to-be who died when his van exploded in a quiet County Durham town.
Thirty-three-year-old Andy Herd was killed instantly when gas cylinders in his Ford Transit van exploded as he drove through Wolsingham on Saturday morning.
Mr Herd was a welder who worked at an industrial estate on the outskirts of Durham City.His wife of four years, Jennifer, is expecting their first child.
Yesterday flowers were piled up close to where the explosion took place. Many contained poignant messages from family and close friends.
Friends have also paid tribute to Mr Herd via The Northern Echo's website.
Malcolm, from Tow Law, wrote: "A great workmate who will be sadly missed. Take care Jennifer."
Jonathan Moore, who now lives in the South of England by grew up in Wolsingham, added: "So sorry to hear about this disaster. My thoughts are with you."
Darlington man Adam Bennett wrote: "I grew up in the town and couldn't believe what happened. I feel so much for Andy's wife, my thoughts are with you."
Another friend, from Crook, posted: "You will be greatly missed mate, God bless all the family, especially Jennifer. This is a sad loss."
