A CHURCH is celebrating 100 years since its first stone was laid.
Great Broughton Methodist Church is marking the centenary of the ceremonial laying of its foundation stone, on May 20, 1907, in Great Broughton High Street.
The celebration began on May 19 with an exhibition in the schoolroom of photos, items and books covering 100 years.
This was opened by Coun Margaret Skilbeck, who was thanked by the Reverend Catherine Hutton and presented with flowers by Rebecca and Sarah Keay.
At the same time, the chapel was open to collect Christian Aid envelopes, along with hosting a Christian Aid exhibition and Traidcraft stall. Many friends and members past and present bought a 120-page book that was produced to commemorate the anniversary.
On May 20, the chapel was packed for a service led by the Rev Alan Clark, who was the minister at Great Broughton from 1975 to 1983. Janet Harbottle played the organ during the service and a celebratory banner was dedicated.
Following the service, there was a buffet lunch at the Wainstones Hotel. Mr Clark led another service in the evening.
The church's celebrations will continue in November, when members will mark 100 years since its official opening. The celebrations will be led by the Rev Richard Davison, whose grandfather was minister at the opening.
