While it takes some drivers all their time manoeuvring their own cars in traffic and into parking spaces, Ruth Wilson from Teesside drives 104 tonne juggernauts for a living.

The 20-year-old Billingham soldier, who could not drive a car when she enlisted in the Army two years ago, spends her time moving Challenger 2 Tanks around the world on the back of an Oshkosh, the latest and most powerful tank transporter in the world.

The former Northfield High School pupil is now a qualified tank transporter driver and holds five different driving licences.

Private Ruth is now back on Teesside for a brief posting to the Armed Forces Careers Office in Middlesbrough.

She said of her achievements in the Army so far: "The qualifications I have already achieved are mine for life.

"I have gained them whilst travelling around the world, something that would never be possible in civilian life."

Careers office spokesman, Warrant Officer Kevin Gibson, said: "It's really useful for our recruits and young soldiers to speak to soldiers like Ruth.

"She is a great example of just what you can achieve in the Army.''
