A RECRUITMENT drive by a new community radio station has been declared a success by its organisers.

Radio Teesdale held events throughout Teesdale this month, with hundreds of volunteers turning up to lend support and offer ideas.

One of the most popular attractions was a blank programming board where people could write down suggestions for programmes they would like to listen to or help to create.

Ideas ranged from local history to a quality children's hour, live council meetings, a showcase for local bands and Teebay, a radio version of e-bay where people could buy and sell items.

As well as competitions, music, food and local interest stands, Radio Teesdale's Ros Evans gave demonstrations on the behind- the-scenes activity that goes into running a radio station and people were able to sign up for a training course on radio production.

"We were overwhelmed with the support, ideas and encouragement we received from local people," said Radio Teesdale station manager Peter Dixon.

"We have recruited some great volunteers who are passionate about making good radio. Several of them immediately came into the offices and prepared a variety of material for broadcast."
