THE Labour opposition group on Durham City Council says it is looking to the future after turbulent times.
The group was suspended at the end of last year by party bosses over a breach of rules involving a councillor who had been suspended.
Now, at the beginning of a second term opposing the ruling Liberal Democrat group, it has elected its officers.
David Bell, who took over as leader from Maurice Crathorne four years ago, continues in the post.
His deputy will be newcomer Peter Mitchell, a 24-year-old graduate, who won one of three seats in Pelaw and Gilesgate.
New group chairman is John Turnbull, who takes over from Mike Syer, who retired at the election, and Peter Thompson, a former Durham County councillor, will be vice-chairman.
The whip is Paul Taylor and secretary is Margaret Robinson.
Councillor Bell said: "The group is united and hopefully that will continue. New members can bring a lot to the group and, more importantly, to the council."
