A Thai boxer is to become the first Briton to fight in front of the King of Thailand.

Michael Dicks, from Darlington, will reach the pinnacle of his career five years after taking up the sport.

The invitation comes after the 21-year-old took top honours at the weekend in one of Europe's biggest events.

Mr Dicks, from Darlington Boxing and Martial Arts Academy, has been chosen to fight as part of King Bhumibol's 80th birthday celebrations.

He will be the first person from the UK to take part in the event, which pits the best of Europe against the best of Thailand.

The fight, on December 5, in the Sanam Luang, a field next to the king's grand palace in Bangkok, is Thailand's biggest celebration. It includes a huge fireworks display and carnival.

Mr Dicks said: "I am really looking forward to it. I cannot wait. It is such a big thing for me to fight in front of the King of Thailand.

"I have fought in European shows in front of four to five thousand fans, but this will be in front of 100,000 people."

He works at the gym teaching children and club members, and trains twice a day. He will spend the rest of the year working towards the highlight of his career.

His coach, Paul Hamilton, said: "To be asked to fight in front of the king is a massive honour.

"People say Michael is the best fighter, pound-for-pound, in England. That is why he is the only English fighter in this competition."

Last Sunday, Mr Dicks defeated Irish fighter Seamus Cogan at the top of the bill of the ExCel show, in London. The fight was stopped a minute into the second round, when Mr Dicks cut his opponent with his elbows.

Mr Hamilton added: "Michael dictated him all the way through. He stole the show really."
